Synopsis

Product Description
From the land of psychedelic whimsical pop comes Snowglobe, arriving just in time to fill the void left by the demise of the Elephant Six label. Sharing some of the same old influences as their fore-bearers, traces of the Kinks, Syd Barrett, and the Beatles are all over Our Land Brains. Fortunately, unlike a lot of their pop contemporaries, Snowglobe possess an unmistakable knack for songwriting. Our Land Brains provides enough material to get lost in for months. Horns, strings, pianos, and ambient sounds are in abundance, but never overshadow the melodies penned by Brad Postlethwaite, Tim Regan, and Tommy Bateman. Some of the weaknesses of Our Land Brains are worth mentioning, but should not be overemphasized. While on the surface a very diverse album, the melodies are a little similar, and after the album's mid-point, you could be excused for asking "Haven't I heard this track before?" The interesting percussion is a welcome change, however. As you had probably guessed, Our Land Brains is an album we have heard before. It often reminded this listener of The Soft Bulletin, both in the instrumentation and the singer's resemblance to Wayne Coyne. While it's not really anything new, Snowglobe probably didn't intend to re-orient anyone's understanding of music. They set out to write some balanced, well-crafted songs, with a healthy pinch of eccentricity. In this they succeeded. Any fan of classic pop will get months of enjoyment out of this. Out of the millions of attempted classic pop albums, the vast majority fall by the wayside, while a select few are able to rise to the summit. Snowglobe have a fair way to go, but they've packed their bags and are on their way up.

CD Reviews

It's always on....months & months after i first bought it

"amazing...i keep expecting to get burned out...which usually happens quite quickly these days...JOY DIVISION's UNKNOWN PLEASURES doesn't come round all that often...I digress:song after song keeps me hangin on:beginning with BIG CITY LIGHTS, back when I first purchased it randomly, on to THE SONG THAT FRUSTRATES US, a two week road trip back in June brought STUBBER to my lips...singing the whole CD three or four times repeating, with my wife at 3 in the morning as we drove through the BLACK HILLS...the question is WHY>?????"
Amazing

"i came across this band accidently, and almost shelved it after the first listen. they have a unique sound, which is a major accomplishment these days. it's the type of album that grows on you, and begins to haunt you. i was surprised to read the review that said this was a happy album. this album is sad and beautiful, with lyrics like "on the day that you changed, it took everything to keep moving..." and "one cold winters night, some friends got together, with blankets and kites, for one last goodbye, the pain in their eyes, could have wilted a flower, the joy in their smiles, nearly lit up the sky..." hardly what i would consider happy lyrics. this album never grows old. like james "laid" or nick cave's "and no more shall we part..." you'll find yourself going back to this album over and over. the lyrics are amazing. if you want an album that will never grow dusty on your shelf and a band that you will brag to your friends about "finding", give them a try. they deserve recognition and unfortunately, they haven't received it yet. but then again, james never received the attention they deserved and now that they are gone, their fast growing fan base is mourning their demise, so it will be with snowglobe if more people do not sing their praises."
