Amazon.comOnce upon a time there were two Andreas Staier CDs of Scarlatti on this label, but apparently only this one remains. Staier's facility is so extreme he is almost too much for Scarlatti, if you can imagine such a thing. He plays some of these pieces so rapidly they barely hold together; yet his musical tightrope- walking is so confident the pieces always stay coherent. Staier plays most of the Sonatas in the pairs recommended by Ralph Kirkpatrick, and keeps the great triad of K. 490-492 together. This is exhilarating, almost exhausting, Scarlatti--but immensely enjoyable. --Leslie Gerber
