Great songs from a simple, and harder, time in our country's history - the Old West. While some may not actually be from the true Old West period, they refer to that period, and the tough souls who gave all to build what we have today. These songs have become mere shadows of a time we romanticize, but grow to appreciate more through their preservation, and continued play. I love every song on this album.

(5 out of 5 stars)

"This disc is not only by far the best volume in the Songs of the West series, it may be the best recording that combines music by these two all-time great singing cowboys. All of the tracks are good, the CD has plenty on it, and limiting the collection to two stars--plus some accompaniment by Sons of the Pioneers--avoids the problem (to me) that some discs have of jumping around too much between eras and styles. All of the pieces are authentic, with acoustic accompaniment that sounds old but pleasant. The producers are to be congratulated for not including some of the later "love song" recordings by Roy, which I find a bit cloying. This is early Roy Rogers, with great singing and some great yodeling. Even if you own discs entirely by Gene or by Roy, you will find this disc to be a great complement. Sadly, Volumes 1 and 2 of this series had the potential to be just as good, but a few ringers on each ruin the good tracks."
