"In her day Elly Ameling was one of the premiere singers of lieder. Her light, perfectly produced voice always had a smile in it, like that of Elisabeth Schumann, but she could also sing melancholy or tragic songs in a way to break your heart. These early recordings of Brahms and Schumann lieder are nonpareil and we should be glad to have them available. The sound is of its period, adequate but not as rich as that in current recordings; one soon adjusts to that and no longer notices."

"Elly Ameling is the touchstone for lieder performance in the post-war generation. Her melting sound and gracious interpretations are simply, poetry in music. Ameling must have a direct line to Brahms, for she has an innate understanding of his often mysterious songs. Her voice is the sound of warmth, compassion, and generosity."
