"Recorded in the early 60's, this recording presents Ameling when her voice was at its best. She is not a Lieder singer who attempts put her interpretation at the foreground; rather, she simply sings these songs with great skill, letting the music speak for itself. The simplicity of her approach, coupled with the remarkable clarity of her voice, makes for a most enjoyable recording. Particularly gratifying are the Schubert selections. Along with various favorites, such as "Gretchen am Spinrade" and "Der Hirt auf dem Felson," the remarkable and relatively rare "Du liebst mich nicht" is included. Also of note is accompanist Joerg Demus' rare (for the 60's!) use of a forte piano. The clarity of the tone on this instrument is quite charming, and make this recording even more enjoyable."
