"This release on Sepia Records features song material that she recorded for Mercury Records during the 1950s. This is the Sophie Tucker that most people remember and the recordings here are beautifully remastered for great sound. Tucker was the genuine "Queen of Show Business" and this release offers evidence of why she deserved the tag. Three cheers to Sepia for this CD and let us hope that Volume II is on the way. I would love to see her "live" album released in this manner with bonus cuts. You can never have too much Sophie Tucker!!

"The Golden Jubilee Album is a wonderful tribute to the great Sophie Tucker. This was constructed so that the recording would sound like Sophie was at home, receiving congratulatory phone calls on her then fifty years in show biz and alternately chatting briefly with a few singing stars of the day who then went on to sing a song in Sophie's honor. The liner notes include a fine essay about Sophie and her career; and the artwork is very well done. The sound is incredible, too.
The album starts with "Hi-Ya, Soph!" This introduces the album and the concept of having Sophie take phone calls and sing with several honors.
The CD essentially breaks down into two arenas: stars singing tunes that Sophie made famous and Sophie singing her own songs. We get rare treats like Patti Page singing "My Yiddishe Momme;" and Vic Damone sings "Who Cares." Eddie Cantor does a short tribute to Sophie as if they were on the phone, and the very famous George Jessel says a few more words to honor Sophie. Jack Benny also says a few words!
Of course, there's really hot fun when Sophie herself performs on this CD. Sure, she half-spoke, half-sang the lyrics; but nobody cared. These fun, suggestive songs usually gave the crowd quite a kick and Sophie loved to sing them in her unique style. Sophie truly was the last of the Red Hot Mamas!
Listen for Sophie on "It's Never Too Late (To Have A Little Fun);" she enjoys every minute of this; and the excellent musical arrangement helps the song along. Sophie makes no bones about it--romance is wonderful for seniors, too! "Vitamins, Hormones And Pills" is a hysterically funny number about how a woman can be turned off by how the doctors give shots men so they can have romance--but there's "no more romancing!" Sophie complains that the man now wants to make love quick before his vitamin shot wears off! "Vitamins, Hormones And Pills" is one of my favorite numbers on this CD.
"There's No Business Like That Certain Business" has a suggestive title that I'm sure you can figure out for yourselves; Sophie delivers this with style and confidence and the piano arrangement couldn't have been better! The "dream sequence" also has Sophie delivering such classics as "In The Good Old Summertime" and "Darktown Strutter's Ball;" these songs enchant me when Sophie belts them out!
Sophie then sings "My Yiddishe Momme" herself; and she makes it clear why this is one of her best loved songs when she sings it. Listen also for Sophie to return to her usual sassy tunes with her doing "Never Let The Same Dog Bite You Twice" with a mighty fine orchestra accompaniment. Sophie also delivers "I'm Living Alone And I Like It" with great confidence and energy.
"Sophie Tucker For President" is an amusing, funny number that Sophie does to perfection; and the CD ends with "The Middle Age Mambo." "The Middle Age Mambo" is sure to make you laugh; it's so good!
Overall, Sophie Tucker had quite a career--and much was still to come even when this was recorded. This excellent CD proves that Sophie Tucker had a talent that was completely irresistible; and we are better off for her sharing her gift with us.

"Through a series of short, snappy sketches, Sophie Tucker relives her career in song. Guest stars pay (scripted) tribute, some of them singing Sophie's hits. Lively fun, underscored throughout with a big, bright orchestra in beautiful fidelity. Recordings that feature songs strung together with words don't usually appeal to me, but this one makes the grade. Joyous, schmaltzy fun."
An unforgettable Icon of the past.

"This album is a wonderful memorial to an artist who left an indelible mark on the entertainment industry in both North America and Europe, particularly England.
She presented herself in just about every entertainment form from the feeling individual (when she sang of her mother) to the comedienne, with so many of her songs, to the rather "unorthodox" women who gave the impression that she was the originator of "The Facts Of Life".
For myself, I have looked for what this album presents for a number of years and to others of my generation, I know you'll treasure it just as much."
