With themes that run from regrets and self-doubts to ambition and faith, Colombian singer/songwriter Soraya examines the possibilities in romantic adventures. On the upbeat rocker "Casi," she describes the struggle to get ... more »back on her feet after a disastrous turn. "Lie for You" takes the perspective of putting on a brave face outwardly while crumbling inside. But there's also hope and healing. In the acoustic and haunting ballad "Solo por Ti," Soraya portrays that falling-in-love moment of happiness with the affecting lyrics "la union de la esperanza y todos mi desos (the union of hope and my desires)." The inspiring and anthemic "A Tu Lado," catalogues the boundless limits of devotion. Soraya's expressive, sometimes half-spoken vocals run the range between Tori Amos' soft whispers and Dolores O'Riordan's yodeling wails. Musically, her pop/rock melodies are tinged by folk and country and recall early Suzanne Vega. Ultimately, Soraya's songs about surviving life's dark turns is especially poignant and relevant considering she's a breast cancer survivor, and an advocate for awareness. --Ramiro Burr« less

"WE HAVE A FEW SORAYA CDs. A WONDERFUL VOICE, LYRICS AND A BEAUTIFUL PERSON. WE ARE SADDENED BY HER LOSS, BUT SHE WILL ALWAYS BE WITH US."

"This album, the 2003 self-title Soraya, is Soraya's fourth album. It was her comeback album after her cancer diagnosis in 2000, and is filled with upbeat, celebratory songs, many with themes of survival and triumph. Ths album went on to win a Latin Grammy for the best album by a singer/songwriter. She then made a fifth album, the 2005 El Otro Lado de Mi (The Better Side of Me) which cemented her career comeback in many countries. Sadly, Soraya passed away on May 10th, 2006, at age 37. She dedicated the last precious months of her life to penning her memories and her messages in an autobiography to benefit the cause of breast cancer education. That book, also called Soraya, is now available, and her life story is told in three parts: The Roots, The Rise, and The Race. This album, Soraya, coordinates with Soraya: A Life of Music, A Legacy of HopeThe Rise. Her book refers heavily to the music she was writing at each important time in her life, and you might enjoy both together. Also, the Soraya album was released in English in Canada, and although it's not widely available, it can occasionally be found used on sites like Amazon and Ebay."
