Out in a blaze of glory....

(5 out of 5 stars)

"The final Soup Dragons album is far and away the best; regrettably buried on the radio due to the collapse of the band. If my history is right, Sean Dickson came into the studio one day mid-recording-session and was met by a lawyer informing him that the rest of the band was quitting. His solution? Tell 'em off by recording the whole thing by himself, and man -- with a fire like that lit under him, he reaches new heights. The guitar is furious and grooves are funkier; what's more: whereas previous Soup Dragons songs tended to be a bit meandering lyrically, once Sean was ticked off and had something to say for once, he really pushed himself and came away with his best songs ever. You can tell by the titles how much was inspired by his breakup with the bandmates: Freeway, Out of Here, One Way Street. I wish he'd been this motivated all the time, just think how much richer the early SD albums would be with this kind of energy and drive! Sean Dickson reaches his musical peak here: punk, funk, psychadelic and everything else. If you ever liked a Soup Dragons song, you should pick this one up. It's on fire -- and just too bad that this is where the band burnt up for good."
