Enchanting

"Putting together two of the greatest Jazz pianists of the last half century could have proven a daunting experience. Instead, the results are highly elegant. Shearing has been listening to Hank Jones since the 1940's, and indeed what both men are exceptional at on this recording is listening to one another. The treatment of these pieces couldn't be more elegant. The piano duo is a rare phenomenon in Jazz. I had the good fortune to hear Stride Monster, the duo of Dick Hyman and Dick Wellstood. Shearing and Jones are definitely in their league. There is not a lot of sizzle in their music making. Instead it is mature, spare, and altogether delightful. The sound is slightly anemic compared to what one expects on the Concord label, but that does not detract from a wonderful experience."
