En-chanting

"The Buddhist Monks seamlessly blends Tibetan Buddhist chants with infectious melodies and uplifiting lyrics to create one of the best New Age recordings of 2006.
Featuring the voices of the Buddhist monks of the Sakya Tashi Ling Monastery (outside Barcelona, Spain) captured in a ceremony of 10-hour continuous chanting, producers Sergio Medrano and Miguel González have mixed the voices into a world pop gumbo of sitar, tabla, guitars, piano, and synthesizer that will be familiar to fans of Enigma or Deep Forest.
More than just a simple mixing project, Medrano and González show some feel for the source material, basing the rhythm of a few songs on the rhythms of the chants, as in Secret Energy or River of Light. More often the chants function as another instrument layered in on 3-4 minute recordings ranging in style from light dance (Mystic Energy) to ambient (Woman's Energy). The stand-out tracks are the pop numbers - My Spirit Flies To You, The Other Side, I Wanna Fly - delicious confections of English lyrics, the refreshing voice of Verónica Concepción, and some clever hooks incorporating bits of chant.
If you like melodic New Age with a bit of rhythm and world music flourishes, if you like Deep Forest or Enigma, if you enjoy music that makes you want to sing along with the recording, if you like uplifiting lyrics, then take the time to listen to this recording at least once. Chances are, you'll listen again and again. It might even, as the monks of Sakya Tashi Ling hope, change your life.

"This is the most unique and enjoyable Buddhist CD I've heard. It's not totally calm though. It has a sort of calm intensity to it. Highly recommended!"

"Very creative employment of Tibetan mantra chants. Set against pop and new age grooves, I can't decide if this represents a defilement or a celebration in modern terms of the chants. I do know that if I had never heard a chant before, this introduction would have turned me on to it. I love the music and some tracks I can't sit still to. My favorite is track 2 that uses the White Tara chant: Energy Rising, I think it's named."
