CD Reviews

More than just screamo
Louise Chunn | London United Kingdom | 02/02/2003
(5 out of 5 stars)

"A lot of pg99 fans were disappointed by this recording as with it they moved away more from the screamo/emoviolence sound that their early records (or 'Documents') had. I, however, adore all of pg99's stuff and this is no exception. The screamy vocals are still there but they've progressed a lot. As with the 'Document #7' EP, there's more variation in style than the previous records. While "Tantrum" is a chaotic ball of rage, "Richmond Is A Hole" showcase their talent for fantastic melodies and eerie-sounding riffs. The fantastic "Virginia" could almost be a radio hit if they did away with the rough production (which I hope they never do) so good is it. I wasn't big on Majority Rule until I heard this record. Their songs go beyond the rules of hardcore with sickening screamy/growling vocals placed over melodic guitar lines (especially seen in "Not In My Name"). Classic stuff. These 2 bands have shown that they can exist outside the screamo/emoviolence bracket with their talent. Anyone with an open mind to melody and brutality, who wants to listen to anything relatively new and exciting in punk/hardcore or just rock music in general, should buy this record."
