CD Reviews

An excellent album - with a little help from the State!
Dr.D.Treharne | Exeter, Devon, United Kingdom | 01/02/2002
(5 out of 5 stars)

"There can't be too many artists who have an album part sponsored by the State, but that's true of this album. The help came from SACEM ( The French Society of Authors, Composers and Music Publishers) which indicates in what high regard de Wilde is regarded in France. It's a magnificent album. With help from his rhythm section of Ira Coleman on Bass and Dion Parson on drums de Wilde tackles a wide variety of material, though the majority ( seven) of the tracks are self written. They're helped out on five of the tracks by the percussion of Bobby Thomas who insinuates himself effortlessly into the overall sound. The piano recording is excellent, and de Wilde is an extremely expressive player even with other peoples material ,like Charlie Parker's "Relaxin' at Camarillo" and a take on "Round Midnight". However my favourite tracks are "Tune for T", "Totem" and the very brief "Fathers" which sounds like a theme that he could return to at some time in the future. If you're looking for a piano based trio that delivers this trio could be a good place to listen. Even better try to get to see him live - he really is something special!"

"Fresh, original material played by a well mixed trio of muscians. Somehow this material seems to reveal a sense of musical humor and playfulness without losing touch with BeBop."
The best in Jazz Piano

"Laurent is probably one of the most gifted pianist of his generation. Inspired by Thelonious Monk (check out his biography of Thelonious), he composed a lot of fine pieces of music. I have been listening to his Spoon-a-Rhythm album over and over, knowing each solo almost by heart, and every time I put this CD on again, new surprises for my ear come up. Energizing, stimulating, the music of Laurent de Wilde is that of a great artist. More please, Laurent !"
