Yin-Yang Between Smooth and Funk

"Spyro Gyra never quite made up their mind concerning whether to play smooth jazz or funk, and this album is probably the best example of that diversity. My favorite track, "Pacific Sunrise", begins with some ocean sounds and smooth jazz before transitioning into a smokin' session of funk including electric guitar, and then reprises the soft opening melody. "Telluride" and "Amber Dream" begin smooth then get funky at the end. "Summer Strut" is a mid-tempo Carnival festival-type song, and "String Soup" is an upbeat saxophone blues rock."

"I've been purchasing Spyro Gyra since they released "Morning Dance" back in the 70's. Of all their albums, however, "Freetime" is my favorite. I promise if you give this cd a chance (listen to it several times), you'll be hooked. I've played this cd to friends and family and everyone enjoys it."

"Freetime is one of the few underrated albums by Spyro Gyra in the 1980's. Of course, there is no reason for this. Almost every musical influence that has influenced so many great preformers are on this album. Jazz, funk, and contemporary. The first track, Freetime is perhaps the best track on the whole album. The album is not a drag and is rather enjoyable to listen to. One good aspect of this album is, a couple songs actually swing. Pacific Sunrise is a good example of this. After demostrating a nice funk groove, the band takes it into a swing. After all their "success" and experimentation, they still go back to their roots from time to time. This album is a winner. I'm guessing the scum on the back cover of the original record is Spirogyra."
