CD ReviewsJubilee Shout Something to Shout About David L. Rowe | Denver, CO United States | 02/19/2003 (5 out of 5 stars) "Although this Turrentine album is difficult to find, it is well worth the search. Turrentine often recorded in quartet and larger group settings, so this sextet session is somewhat of a rarity. That he did not record more in such a configuration is unfortunate because Stan the Man sounds authoritative in this mid-size group including his brother Tommy on trumpet and Kenny Burrell on guitar.
The opening title track sets the stage for a varied, interesting album: robust, swinging, and complex, this song begins with a tremendous Turrentine solo and never misses a beat as the other members sieze and pass the baton for ten minutes of jazz bliss. The other numbers include ballads and walking-tempo pieces that showcase Turrentine's strong, full tenor voice. Especially rewarding is hearing Tommy Turrentine's brash contributions, which add just the right amount of daring to this excellent date. Now part of an outstanding Mosaic set (available by mail order only), Jubilee Shout is recommended in any form you can find it. Blue Note jazz at its best." |
