"Recorded near the end of a career that spanned over 40 years, Stanley shines as a jazz legend. Sure, his unique sound and emotion are here, but he's also reflective and even more communicative. He's joined by Ron Carter on bass, Cedar Walton on piano, Billy Higgins on drums and Freddie Hubbard on a couple of the cuts, playing primarily standards.Worth finding!"

"This album is mostly straight-up jazz, each track a self-contained gem. But the diamond that shines most brightly is Spirits Up Above, a Roland Kirk number, covered by the so-called world-music band, Osibisa on their 1980 album, Woyaya, and more recently on Steve Turre's album titled after, and featuring The Spirits Up Above and other Roland Kirk compos.. I like Turre's version with vocals, but it pales by comparision to this by Freddie Hubbard and Stan, which alone is worth the price of the CD. More than a mood is an understatement!!"
