CD ReviewsUnparalled extremes 06/06/2002 (5 out of 5 stars) "Incredible music that has to be heard to be believed. The style is hardcore metal, but unlike any other hardcore metal band past or present. This is completely different from today's metalcore bands, too. Comparable only to Swans in intensity. They succeed where so many bands have failed: in playing slow, long songs. Vocals are part screamed and part sung over precision drumming and heaviest guitar riffs that you can imagine. Great lyrics. Overlooked, but Starkweather may very well be one of the best bands of all times and all styles." Gods of their Genre Kiyoshi E. Young | Sandy, UT United States | 03/11/2003 (5 out of 5 stars) "Starkweather excell at their genre heck they practially started it. They have infullenced almost every hardcore/metal band. There would be no Converge, Poison the Well etc. if these guys(and a girl) hadn't released this extremely influential record.Amazing lyrics part screamed part sung.Heavier than anything you've heard. yeah just get it." Not their best work but probably a good place to start leviticus85 | kalamazoo,MI | 01/05/2000 (4 out of 5 stars) "starkweather is an extremely bleak and depressing hardcore/metal band...the overall style mixes elements of early black sabbath with the amebix and maybe a touch of early death metal...the songs are all really slow and played at the same dragging tempo...after awhile the sound can get a little monotonous but i think that goes with the territory...the vocals vary from singing to screaming to hissing to growling...the one thing holding this record back is the production...the band sounds much better with a thicker, fuller production like they got on their second album "into the wire". i'd say this is a good introduction to the band...on their next album they developed a much harsher and heavier sound which isn't so easy to get into as this album is...fans of early black sabbath and metallica would probably even like this album...oh yeah the lyrics are some of the most beautiful moving lyrics on any album ever."
