CD Reviews

A fine holiday offering from the Statlers
Joe Sixpack -- Slipcue.com | ...in Middle America | 10/28/2004
(4 out of 5 stars)

"With their penchant for nostalgia-based material, the Statler were the perfect candidates to make a Christmas album... In fact, they've made quite a few! This disc reissues one of those records in its entirety, 1978's "Statler Brothers Christmas Card," which has a nice mix of old classics and new material. The new stuff is best: the boys pick out plainspoken, sentimental songs like "I Believe In Santa's Clause" and "Christmas To Me" that wonder what's happened to the old-fashioned, love-your-neighbor flavor of the holiday, and long for the good old days... And you really believe 'em when they sing about it... Good record; not too corny and certainly worth checking out."
Holiday Music at its Best
Jerald E. Mills | Santee, CA, USA | 07/22/2005
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Terrific Christmas album from the Statlers. This album was done when the group was in their prime (though they always sounded great), and the original tenor Lew DeWitt was still with the group. "I Believe in Santa's Cause" and "The Carols Those Kids Used to Sing" are two of my favorites, since I've only ever heard them here and they're great songs. The medley the four of them do for the final number is great also, with each of the boys singing a traditional hymn and wrapping up together with "Silent Night". I listen to it many times each holiday season--my guess is you will, too."
A great country Christmas album
Peter Durward Harris | Leicester England | 05/08/2006

"Note that this is a straight re-issue of their first Christmas album (Christmas card).

The Statler brothers had two trademarks - great harmonies and great original songs, both of which are in evidence on this, the first and best Christmas album they recorded.

Like many others, they decided to include some Christmas classics here. Jingle bells is slowed down, but not too much, and it works brilliantly as a change from the standard speed, but I wouldn't want everybody to do it like this. They also do great versions of other classics, some of which are cleverly strung together in A Christmas medley.

The six Statler originals are very much what you would expect from them if you are familiar with their other music - and they are all great songs. I don't know of any covers of these songs, but that's just another reason to buy this CD.

This album will appeal particularly to fans of traditional country music, but the Statlers have a very easy on the ears style and should appeal to anybody who likes geat harmony singing."
