CD Reviews

One of my favorites
Dr. Eric M. Jones | Wodonga, Victoria, Australia | 09/08/2001
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Steve Gillette was active in Los Angeles in the mid-1960s and I had the great pleasure of seeing him perform live. A talented guitarist with a mellow, captivating voice, he also wrote most of his own, compelling material. One of the many superb pieces, Darcy Farrow, as later recorded by Ian and Sylvia. I have owned the album for over a quarter century and it is still one of my favorites."
A legend's work restored
Martin G. Kalin | 04/25/2000
(5 out of 5 stars)

"This album is a classic, not to be missed. There's not a bad cut on it and particularly outstanding are the Erlking, Back on the Street Again, and Molly and Tenbrooks. As a writer, Gillett's in the premier class. As a singer of mostly his own songs, he's in the same class."
Craftsmanship
Joseph A. Baldassarre | Boise, Idaho USA | 02/26/2001

"Steve Gillette should be rated among the top 5 male folk composer/singers of his generation. His clear baritone voice, honesty, and writing warrant the stature over many others.Even though this album is his first, the musicianship and song writing craftsmanship still stand up today. We all know that his songs have appeared on several other albums by other singers and that he is appreciated in the business. That not withstanding, Steve Gillette's delivery do his own tunes better justice. The album is solid from start to finish, but of specific note is his rendition of the Goethe poem "Erlkonig". Schubert's version is a monument to his time and Steve Gillette's version is a monument for ours. This is a must album for any serious collection."
