Synopsis

Amazon.com
Poltz spent more than a decade fronting goofball San Diego rockers The Rugburns before becoming an "overnight sensation" as the cowriter of Jewel's smash single "You Were Meant for Me." On One Left Shoe, he steps out in a similar singer-songwriterly direction, fashioning a collection of confessional folk pop tunes that are about evenly split between movingly memorable and blandly boring. Jewel sings along on the catchiest tune of the bunch, "Silver Lining" (which she cowrote with Poltz); other highlights include "The Great Mystery" and "Kicking Distance." At 57 minutes, the album would be stronger with three or four of the weaker tunes left off; but as a solo debut, One Left Shoe is a largely auspicious affair. --Peter Blackstock

One word - ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

"I beg to differ with the amazon.com reviewer. I don't think there's a dud on this album. While some of the lyrics can be corny (luck/buck/stuck etc), the album is a powerful, sweet album full of raw emotion. Highlights include "forbidden fruit", a song about a fictional encounter with a prostitute ("in my mind my mother said "you'd better not!"/then again she always told me that i wouldn't like the taste of beer"), "everything about you", a love song he wrote for a friend of his who died a few days after he played it to her, and "good morning (waking up with you)", a song which i think easily rivals You were meant for me. The easygoing accoustic guitar, sweet sentiments, great vocal delivery all point to the track that could have been. ie, if this track had been properly promoted, this could have been the equivelant of what "who will save your soul" was for Jewel. Anyway, i look forward to his next album with intense pleasure, as I have listened to this so much, constantly, that it has created a lot of joy for me."
One of my Favorite CDs in the bunch!

"Steve Poltz's cute style, voice and sense of humor keeps me hooked. This debut album is great. You can listen to it when you want to be lulled to sleep or while lounging, there are even some pick-me-up songs that are just enough to keep you going. All in all, he's a great performer and I can't wait for the next album. P.S. He's even better in concert!"
