Synopsis

Steve Roach makes music that moves outside of conventional time and space. As when small pebbles are tossed in a placid pond, his subtle changes have monumental effects, because the dynamics have been lowered and time stretched to the edge. That's why, at about the 23-minute mark of this 73-minute ambient opus, it's such a shock when a low growl--like slow-motion waves--breaks across the speakers. "Artifact Ghost," the only composition on Immersion: Two, is another of Roach's long-form works, harkening back to Structures from Silence but without even that album's distended melodic sway. As a gentle Twilight Zone-like siren sound wafts its way in the far distance, Roach does a slow dive into a music of deep viscosity. With sounds rustling like insects prattling in the eaves and the wind brushing branches against the window, "Artifact Ghost" will either scare you out of your pants or take you out of your body. On Immersion: Two, Steve Roach continues to make a rarefied sound as the Mark Rothko of electronic music. --John Diliberto

CD Reviews

Part Two of Steve Roach's Immersion's.

(5 out of 5 stars)

"Steve Roach has earnestly followed up to the release of "Immersion One" earlier in the year with "Immersion Two". Like the first volume, the disc consists of a single uninterupted ambient piece that runs over 73-minutes in length. Whereas "Immersion One" was more of a minimalist piece with only subtle changes, "Immersion Two's" piece entitled "Artifact Ghost" features a bit more variation. The overall feel is a bit darker and intense as well. A slow forboding phrase repeats throughout the piece with occasional jolts of low rumbling tones which add to the overall intensity of the music.

Despite its subtle themes and variations, "Artifact Ghost" is still a piece of music that is intended as background music to enhance the mood of whatever room or place the music is being played in. Like the previous "immersion", echoes of Brian Eno are displayed in abundance throughout this music but the sound is definitely Steve Roach at his most ambient.

Overall, this is a solid follow-up to the first "Immersion" and one can only hope that "Immersion Three" will be even stronger."
This cd is invaluable ......

"...to listen to at night or on a dark, cloudy afternoon when contemplation is best. Listen to in the dark by candlelight & one will be able to see ghosts ooze out of the walls of your abode.

Steve Roach is a genius & one of the BEST American Composers of our times!"
