Synopsis
Amazon.comThough lambasted in some quarters as cynical clones of the then-vaunted "Seattle sound" (in particular, Alice in Chains and Pearl Jam) STP's 1993 debut nonetheless found a considerable following for its potent crunch and sly hooks. While some tracks do seem to ape the era's grunge ethos a bit too slavishly, there's also a sense that perhaps Weiland and company were merely sharing some of the same influences as their contemporaries--and on standouts like the riff-savvy "Sex Type Thing" and the moody acoustics of "Creep", accomplishing it with a bit more ambitious range. Indeed, the radio anthem "Crush" belies a devotion to songcraft disdained by many of their peers, one that served as an effective bridge between the stadium rock of the '70s and '80s and the more introspective alt-rock just then coming into vogue--even if the album's triple-platinum sales showed just how ironic and misplaced the "alternative" label could ultimately be. --Jerry McCulley

Seth D. (4wallz) from SPARTA, TN Reviewed on 10/15/2011... Still one of my favorite albums of all time. In 1992 STP realeased this rock gem. It wasn't univerally aclaimed though that's for sure. While fans loved it enough to make it go 8 times platinum the critics dismissed it as just another grunge cd. Well, STP are still around making music, so what you got to say to that critics? Here's a song breakdown:
Dead and Bloated 5.0 Heck of a start to a cd. Scot Weiland's growling lyrics over a killer riff.
Sex Type Thing 4.9 A strong song condeming date rape. Pretty powerful stuff.
No Memory 3.7 Cool interlude that leads into....
Wicked Garden 4.8 Strong rock song. Another classic.
Sin 4.7 A very underated song. Love the lyrics!
Naked Sunday 4.2 Interesting beat. Love the production on this song.
Creep 5.0 STP go acoustic on this one, and it is amazing. You can feel the intensity in Scott's voice too!
Piece of Pie 4.0 Interesting song. Not really in love with it though.
Plush 5.0 It doesn't get any better than this! The music, the lyrics, the singing, the baseline. Everything comes together in this one! Worth buying the cd just for this song!
Wet My Bed 2.5 Throw away track in my opinion. Very short and could've been left off.
Crackerman 5.0 My favorite song on the record! I saw Velvet Revolver play one time and they did this song. So good!
Where the River Goes 4.9 Good long ending song!
53.7 out of 60.0. Not too shabby. If you don't have this cd but love rock, then you need to get this. 2 of 2 member(s) found this review helpful.

Stone temple pilots fine debut album core!! Paul Mcguinn | chicago il usa. | 06/06/2010 (4 out of 5 stars) "stone temple pilots were and are a great band!!in 1992 they started their carreer with this great album 'core'.from the first two fisted track'dead and bloated you just know your in for some kickass rock 90,s style.s.t.p. at times had some difficulties sometimes due to scott wielands substance issues.when this album came out s.t.p. was compared to pearl jam and alice in chains.s.t.p.sounds a little like alice in chains.but s.t.p. most definately has their own trademark sound and on this album and the two albums that followed the band continued to get better and expand their sound and songwriting.that being said the songwriting on this album is very good.for me the best cuts on this album are;dead and bloated, sin, wicked garden, sex type thing, plush, where the river goes[which i think is a very underrated song]creep[s.t.p.,s first recorded acoustic tune]and piece of pie. i got this album when it first came out back in 92 and it is still just as good today.if you are an s.t.p. fan you know this album is classic.if you are a new comer to s.t.p. this album and 'purple' and also 'tiny music' would be good starting points.enjoy this one!"
