Synopsis

Although they date from 1954, these justly celebrated readings of Ein Heldenleben and Zarathustra have yet to be bettered. Reiner learned his Strauss the old-fashioned way--by working in Dresden with the composer's favorite orchestra during the second decade of the 20th century, and by hearing Strauss conduct both there and in Berlin. The sweep and sense of style Reiner acquired in those years inform these magnificent performances from the beginning of his brief but glorious heyday in Chicago. The sound on this CD is sumptuous and comes closer to that of the old LPs than RCA's "Living Stereo" CD reissue does. --Ted Libbey

The Definitive Version of Also Sprach Zarathustra...
Suzanne B. Kelly | Palo Alto, CA USA | 05/20/2000
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Although this is not the most hyped or flashily packaged version of Also Sprach Zarathustra, I feel it is the best. Fritz Reiner was a close friend of Richard Strauss, who understood his music well, and the orchestra was the Chicago Symphony at the height of its fame and power. This version of Also Sprach Zarathustra has been issued again and again, including a commemmorative LP from the Franklin Mint in colored vinyl(!). It is a bit different from other interpretations of Also Sprach Zarathustra, especially in the delay at the top notes of the opening theme; it is surprising what a huge difference these small, intimate touches make in my enjoyment of the piece. All of these reasons make it a must-have for fans of Richard Strauss and Also Sprach Zarathustra."
