"After listening to Sue Mathys sing this repertoire, the original recordings momentarily fade from mind; her intense innate musicality and actor chops combined make for a truly riveting aural experience. The selections from Gypsy particularly interest, given the various versions available in the U.S. Ms. Mathys makes them her own, finding new, compelling textual details to highlight in her superb renditions. On the non-musical theater side, fans of Piaf will find special delight in the gorgeous conducting of Mr. Dias and the sound he elicits from the Luzern ensemble. Listen particularly to the treatment of "arretez la musique" at the end of L'accordéoniste: a vulnerability that is almost painful to hear makes it even more delicious. Highly unusual and highly recommended!"
