"I own this CD and it is excellent. The prior review was by a person being overly critical and not enjoying an excellent session because of predijuce against jazz musicans having roots beyond the 1950s (Vic Dickenson). By stating that "Putting Coleman Hawkins along-side a 1920s trombonist was buffonery" proves the reviewer does not understand Coleman Hawkins CHOSE Vic Dickenson for this date. Therefore, the reviewer is essentially questioning Coleman's taste in choosing side musicans for his recording sessions. I would rely on Coleman's judgement rather-than the previous reviewers'.



Also, it shows that some cannot enjoy all the colors of jazz i.e., swing, bop, soul, free, avante-garde, and funk. Further, it proves you got to make your own decision and not rely on internet jazz-know-nothings. Vic Dickenson was an excellent trombonist. This CD is one of my favorite Coleman Hawkins', which I own many. It jams!"

"but not a first rate session, either. Neither Dickenson nor trumpeter Joe Thomas fare well with pianist Tommy Flanagan, who was too modern for their swing era styles. In fact the Prestige label ruined several dates around the same time as this one by foisting bop pianists on swing musicians. Everybody tries hard on this one, but the results are just so-so."
