"The "Dresses too Short" half of the CD (the 1st 12 songs) shows Syl Johnson hitting on all cylinders. Along with the "Total Explosion" album (on Hi records) it is a required purchase for any fan of soul music. Most of the other Syl Johnson CD's and albums just are not this consistent. Well worth checking out."

"Both albums are great in their own way. The "Dresses Too Short" part is high-quality, high-energy, if somewhat generic soul music; "Is It Because I'm Black," which is much funkier and more political, is a bona fide classic. The title track and Syl's version of "Walk a Mile in My Shoes" are standouts, but the whole album is great.



Beware of a similar CD on the Charly label that's floating around out there - the track listing is different, most notably lacking the cover of "Come Together," and the sound quality is inferior."
