CD Reviews

Absolutely stunning Scottish, good Reformation
Santa Fe Listener | Santa Fe, NM USA | 09/11/2005
(4 out of 5 stars)

"I grew up with this version of the Socttish Sym. and still adore its drama and passion--very different from the light, rather cautious Mendelssohn favored by Abbado or the foursquare kind from Masur. Bernstein just nails this one, and the NY Phil. is at its most exuberant. STanley Drucker's bubbling clarinet solo in the scherzo is the best I've ever heard. We are told that it's a mistake, due to a printer's error, to take the processional that caps the finale as grandly as Bernstein does here. The latest edition calls for the same quick tempo to be maintained throughout. Too bad, because Bernstein's version is triumphant.

He doesn't seem all that interested in the Reformaiton Sym., however, which needs a lot more help to take off. Munch and the BSO breqathe more life into the score, and Karajan captures its high-Victorian majesty. If you are buying LB's Mendelssohn, his Italin Sym from this era with the Philharmonic, an early recording dating from 1958, is wonderful, also. A shame that Sony has never seen fit to combine the Scottish and Italian on one CD."
