"Superbly played, this recording in pristine sound represents Berglund's most mature interpretation of the complete Sibelius cycle, masterworks whose greatness increases with time. Berglund's readings have always been benchmarks, with this superb orchestra in modern sound, these readings will stand out at the top of a crowded field. These readings have all of Barbirolli's affection and detail with a far more virtuosic orchestra. Must have recordings."

"When I saw this new pairing at the CD megastore, I was excited, and when I brought it home and heard it on my system, I was elated. What a wonderful recording! In the Fifth Symphony, the Chamber Orchestra of Europe is augmented with a few extra strings, but is still a relatively small ensemble compared to a large symphony orchestra. The sound is never thin; the smaller forces result in clarity, and a heightened sense of interplay of woodwinds, strings, and brass. This is not the only way to do Sibelius (Sir Colin Davis's new set with the London Symphony Orchestra is a wonderful achievement with a large orchestra), but it is a most rewarding and welcome way to hear this music. If you are a Sibelius fan, you really ought to hear this CD, which is recorded in luminous sound."
