Amazon.comThese are excellent performances, by a period instrument orchestra considerably smaller than the one Haydn had for the original Paris performances of these symphonies. That's not a problem as long as the balances remain transparent and clear, as they are. However, Bruno Weil occasionally uses some unduly noticeable rhythmic freedom which causes momentary distractions. If you find this at all disturbing, you might prefer the similar coupling of these works by Goodman and the Hanover Band (Hyperion), the major competition for the same repertoire on period instruments. Either disc is a very satisfying way to hear some wonderful, under-exposed music. --Leslie Gerber
