Wonderful and Neglected Symphony

"Alfven's Second is a large scale symphony (nearly 50 minutes) in an approachable style rather like Brahms or Dvorak. It exudes a life-affirming warmth and glow, but also touches great depths. The finale is a contrapuntal tour-de-force that at times suggests Bruckner. This wonderful symphony should be much better known, as I cannot imagine any audience not being won over by it.
Leif Segerstam and the Stockholm Philharmonic play the piece for all it's worth. They really seem to have the idiom in their bones, and believe in every note. It is a glorious performance, recorded in vintage analog sound. I've heard several other versions but none of them even approach this recording. A must for any lover of Nordic music (Grieg, Sibelius), or for that matter any lover of great music."
