Synopsis

Amazon.com
A good Brahms Third from a conductor who was not as great a Brahms conductor as he thought he was, three complete symphony cycles for DG notwithstanding. Unfortunately, you can also get Claudio Abbado's newer, better sounding, better conducted version of the same symphony on the same label at the same price. So unless you're a Herbert von Karajan completist, there's no particular reason that you need to have this recording, though it's no disgrace if you do. --David Hurwitz

CD Reviews

The symphony performance is great - the overture is poor
08/29/1999
(4 out of 5 stars)

"In regards to the 3rd sypmohny: It is surprising, that at the age of 80, Karajan provides us with fire and passion and emotion erupting like it does. Not so much technical-perfection minded anymore, he concentrates on the emotion, and the result is sheer excitement. This does not, however, concern the recording of the Tragic Overture, done in 1983. The performance here is shallow, violent and unsatisfying, and the technical problems of the orchestra playing are disturbing, not to say annoying. The 1964 version of this recording of the overture ( with the Vienna Philharmonic, to found with recording company Decca ), is the best one, probably the very best ever made, an emotional volcano."
