CD ReviewsAn Old Friend in New Clothes Mr John Haueisen | WORTHINGTON, OHIO United States | 06/24/2007 (5 out of 5 stars) "I find reviews of CDs difficult, for so much of it can be subjective, depending on our own preferences. But at this date, there are no reviews of this performance, and I'd like to provide you with at least some information.
Although I had never heard performances by the Radio Symphony Orchestra of Berlin, or their conductor here, Heinz Rogner, I am happy to report that they played my favorite symphony, the Mahler Third, wonderfully well. The percussion instruments were crisp, and managed to shine through the orchestra at all times. (And percussion is very important in Mahler.) The violin soloist (Jolan Berta) was "just right." Likewise, the alto, Jadwiga Rappe sang just as Mahler had written it--no special memorable touches that we might look for with a "big name" singer, but exactly the way Mahler indicated he wanted it done. There was a unique (woodwind, I think) whining sound that was almost grotesque, just after the "O Mensch," (about three minutes into the section) If you're familiar with M 3, you will recognize this the instant you hear it. It's hauntingly strange, and I've never heard this portion played with that "dipthongy whine"-- but it does work--adds something different, but not totally out of place. Another "different" aspect was the famous posthorn seranade. It sounds as if it was performed by a muted coronet--really! It shocked and annoyed me at first, but later I thought about it, and each performance of a symphony is like seeing an old friend in new clothes. This "outfit" was shockingly unusual for an old traditionalist like me, but maybe I will grow to like it--and maybe you will like it. Just wanted to warn you about it, in case you're looking for the usual mellow, posthorn seranade. Hope I've provided a little useful advice." |
