CD Reviews

Splendid orchestral playing and the bright star that is Elly
Ingrid Heyn | Melbourne, Australia | 05/22/2006
(5 out of 5 stars)

"There are several very good recordings of Mahler's Fourth Symphony, with the respective orchestras working beautifully to create the rich yet almost transparent texture of Mahler's scoring. Strongly harmonic with a nice light series of textural layers, the overall impression is one of Romanticism, not quite heavy but never thin, extremely melodic without losing an almost narrative drive.

It is perhaps this which makes the addition of a soprano voice so very apt. There must, I think, be something almost instrumental in the voice of the soprano fortunate enough to be performing in Mahler's Fourth - a quality of purity and clarity conveying a dazzling ambience of youthfulness and ardour.

Although I have several excellent recordings of this work, it is this recording which I consider the best and which is dearest to my heart. Who could fail to fall in love with the beautiful voice of Elly Ameling? Who could not be won over by the intrinsic charm of her singing and her faultless intontation and impeccable sense of style? As the soprano in this recording, Ms Ameling's performance leaves nothing further to be wished for.

Unequivocally recommended."
A Mahler-vellous rendition!

"Not being a brass player (!), I had not come across Mahler until I heard this recording while I was studying conducting at university. It's wonderful! Right from the outset, Mahler seems to want to play with us - the child-like motifs and cheerful melodies are quite enchanting. There is never a dull moment! The addition of the soprano in the last movement is an inspired idea, and I can't think of anyone who could do it better than Elly Ameling, the fabulous Dutch soprano with the crystal-clear voice and faultless diction. You will be enthralled!"
