"I have owned this disc for some time but I haven't seen it in the stores for a while which led me to believe it was out of print. Thank goodness it is available. The reviewer from Eugene, Oregon is incorrect in saying this is an analog recording, in fact both works were recorded digitally in one of Sony's first stabs at digital recording (they invented the cd player). The results are thrilling. The sound is spectacular and I love Maazel's direct approach with the 5th. It is raw and biting, just as I imagine Beethoven would have wanted. This performance has been unjustly neglected by the experts who rate cd recordings. The VPO, besides living up to their reputation as the best orchestra in the world, give a little extra here for some reason. I also love how the engineers left the audience applause in the recording. Schubert's "Unfinished" fares just as well."
Spectacular live recording of the 5th

"Maazel exudes greatness in the excellent live recording of the VPO on tour in Japan. The recording quality is excellent, despite being early 80's analog, live, by a label not normally known for audiophile greatness. The second movement is truly inspiring and is one of my very favorite pieces, ever. The basses really shine here. Also included is another stellar performance, this time of Shubert's unfinished symphony."

"a not-to-be-missed recording of beethoven's 5th; the clarity and aggresiveness of the vienna philharmonic under maazel's command must be heard to be believed."
