CD ReviewsAmazing album from an amazing band! David D. Nash | Owensboro, Ky United States | 08/28/2004 (5 out of 5 stars) "I can't help but read the reviews of this CD and cringe (good ratings but not enough detail). I'll tell you what I think about it.. "Lost Memoirs and Faded Pictures" is up most brutality, with passionate vocals and lyrics that will open your eyes. A large percentage of metalcore bands out there today sound very much the same (same riff structure, same flowery poetic lyrics, etc) but Symphony in Peril take elements of old and new to create something refreshing for the ears. At times its reminiscent of older Everytime I Die, or Norma Jean but at other times it reminds me of newer Remembering Never or even Soilent Green. The breakdowns are catchy and will have you dancing but it has the technicality to keep it changing and not get boring. The vocals coincide with the breakdowns, almost in-human lows that remind me of Soilent Green but then Shawn (vocalist) switches it up with a high pitched scream that can peel paint off the walls (or get you to dance some more! :) Christian or non-christian, I would recommend this album to anyone who appreciates brutal aggressive music. " Portrait Brian | New jersey | 08/06/2004 (5 out of 5 stars) "The words of this album realy insperi me alot because like normajena it has alot of meaning and its very deep subject matters. Shawn, ex zao vox formed s.i.p. which was the right move to be honest...Nothing against zao tho.Yeah, realy great songs and realy heavy music that s i p brings its not even a little weak at all.For the production ? Realy, top notch and great lisycs to follow along. Flawless, release by simphony in peril!" Zao en Christos Troy Polidori | Tujunga, CA United States | 03/20/2004 (3 out of 5 stars) "Ever seen Indiana Jones in the Raiders of the Lost Ark? Remember the beginning scene where Harrison Ford is forced to escape from the shrine before the gigantic boulder smashes him to pieces? Remember how he barely escaped after fighting through a traitor, falling down an endless pit, losing his hat, and being shot at by who knows how many deadly weapons only to be held at arrow-point by a pack of savage natives controlled by one of his arch enemies? Remember how breathless that made you feel, and how blisteringly hardcore it was? Well, that is exactly how you'll feel after experiencing Symphony In Peril's debut album for Facedown Records, Lost Memoirs and Faded Pictures. The Christian music scene has been blessed by a number of chaotic hardcore bands within the last couple of years. Bands like Nodes of Ranvier and Norma Jean have rose to popularity in both the Christian and Secular markets because of their crazed hardcore and maniacal breakdowns. When Shawn Jonas, the original vocalist of critically acclaimed Zao, announced that he was finally going to come out of his retirement as a youth pastor (can you imagine Shawn Jonas as your youth pastor?!?) to give Christian music a dose of the righteous hardcore it so desperately needs, many a hardcore kid rejoiced. And rejoice they shall. Symphony In Peril's debut album rips intensely through ten tracks of complete mayhem without letting up on the strict breakdowns for a single second. In fact, I would be surprised if there were a riff on this album that lasted for a full 20 seconds. The guitars are tight, synchronized and chocked full of quick speed and rhythm changes. The drums are also incredibly fast and precise (e.g. Shadow over a Bleeding Heart). Above all, however, is Shawn Jonas' vocal work. His range still isn't something to brag about (all he really features is a deep-throated death metal growl and a high-pitched hardcore scream), but his passion for what he has to offer is apparent on this album. His lyrics come straight from the heart and it's obvious by the way he acts live. In conclusion, Symphony In Peril has a lot to offer today's chaotic hardcore fan. However, Lost Memoirs... would have had a much bigger impact on Christian music had been released 2 years ago. It's unfortunate that a band with so much promise comes off sounding exactly like it's contemporaries. Despite this lack of innovation, Symphony In Peril is still an awesome hardcore band with an awesome heart set on the evangelism of the lost, so this album is by no means a disappointment. Lost Memoirs... may not be the remedy to the perilous symphony that ails radio stations today, but it is definitely a delicious recipe of what it should be."
