CD Reviews

Rollin' with character
Anaxamaxan | Eugene, OR, United States | 07/18/2005
(4 out of 5 stars)

"How did I find this CD? I forgot I had it, and then popped it in and was very pleasantly surprised. Ah, how often does that happen?!?

Colossal is ambient and soulful, informed by hip hop sound but more in the realm of downtempo electronica. It has character, and Take have the artisan's confident deft touch with their musical tools. It might seem unattractive since half the album is remixes, but the remixes to some extent make the album. Circles and Squares is the best original track, but the two of the remixes of The Start of Our Ending (TSOOE) are the best on the album - The Daedelus Remix of TSOOE is the best, followed closely by the Nordic Soul Vocal Remix of the same. The female vocalist on the Nordic Soul Remix is smooth without being trite or overbearing.

This gets 4 stars only for the reason that half the album is remixes of the original material. It could get a bit (but only a little) repetitious, but would be great compilation material. Overall though, I'd recommend it."
