Synopsis

Album Description
This 12-inch features cover versions of the Magnetic Fields' "Take Ecstasy With Me" and Nate Dogg's "Get Up". These two seemingly contrasting tunes were chosen because the band wanted to teach themselves something new. They learned a lot trying to make a pop song, using a string quartet and generally trying to make a song for people to trip out on. The Magnetic Fields song is great because it replaces sex, drugs, and rock 'n' roll with love, XTC, and house music. Nate Dogg's tune is unjustly overlooked and the band believes one day he'll be recognized as one of the true greats of soul music.

CD Reviews

A healthy turn
M. Camp | DC | 12/04/2005
(5 out of 5 stars)

"The b side on this albumn is really amazing. I find myself listening to it over and over. It begins rather conventionaly, with a heavy beat and a convincing, unironic delivery of otherwise silly gangsta lyrics "I'm on my way to the liquor store With E-V-E and my nigga Roast".

With the stage set, !!! slowly and clevery begins to mutate the format of the song. Three minutes in, the tempo shifts gears into a hypnotic dance beat. It lasts long enough to be enjoyed until the guitar feed back overwhelms the dance beat and eventualy disrupts it. From 5 minutes on, the song devolves into near complete chaos.

Totally unrecognizable from the beginning of the song, the listener is jabbed at with angular guitars, feedback and mutilated vocals. This is all done on top of a driving primal drum beat that makes the song operate like its part of a tribal battle ritual.

I only hope that they continue in this vein if they release a full legnth. This, however could be a flash in the pan. !!!'s main weakness: Nic Offers corny and rude lyrics, were nicely replaced with Nate Dogg's this time. Though cover songs worked well for an EP, I can't imagine an entire album of cover songs being a good idea.

I guess we'll just have to wait and see.
