"This is pretty much "as good as it gets" when it comes to piano-bass playing, from two of the most respected names in the biz. It's all spot-on, classic, and never flashy or predictable. Jimmie is the best at picking lesser known tunes, and bringing them out to show how they should be more well known. Ray Brown is as solid as they come, and these two play as if they were made for each other...I couldn't recommend it more highly."

An Understated But Solid Sense Of Swing!

"Combine the huge tone of bassist Ray Brown with the harmonically sophisticated piano of Jimmy Rowles and you have a extremely low keyed but pleasantly solid listening experience. Enough has been said of Ray Brown, and rightfully so, that I always referred to him as the "All Universe Bassist". Jimmy Rowles, on the other hand, never attained such recognition and was chiefly known as providing exceptional backing for vocalists (Billie Holiday, Peggy Lee, and Ella Fitzgerald) and as a studio musician who always had the knack for picking the perfect chord for the right spot. There is a subtlety to his playing that hints at more than what he actually plays.



My favorites....... that would be a really beautiful "Come Sunday", followed by "Nancy" and "Smile". "I'm Gonna Sit Right Down And Write Myself A Letter" is a good example of stride piano. This cd, recorded in 1979, is a follow-up of the 1977 release "As Good As It Gets". I have this one also but haven't written a review at present. That one is apparently in print and this one isn't.......go figure!



This cd will appeal to anyone who enjoys really listenable "quiet" jazz performed by two technical masters of their instruments, bass-piano duos in particular or just knowledgeable fans of these two musicians. It's something I'm happy to have in my collection!"

"Tasty is one of my records that never stays in the collection for over a fortnight. this album is fantastic, ray brown is my favourite bassist of all time but iv'e never heard jimmy outside this record,for some reason. this album has no fancy virtuoso jive, just simple and great. if you don't have this album, get it."
