A Different Interpretation

"Even though I already had several recordings of these symphonies, I am very glad to have added Rostropovich's to my collection. My favorite recordings of these symphonies have always been the ones by Claudio Abbado who, almost uniquely I think, manages to generate a high level of excitement while avoiding the bombast frequently heard in the later symphonies, particularly the 4th. Rostropovich approaches these symphonies in a mann I have never heard before, even from other Russian conductors. The tempos in many places are slow to the point of being half what one usually hears, then often later balanced with a sudden rush of excitement. But even with the most extreme tempos, he brings a fully realized approach to each symphony that works magnificently. Broad sweeping melodies, powerful but controlled sound, and the total commitment of the conductor provide an interpretation that is at once both fresh and personal and that will have me listening to these recordings again and again."
