"This Tchaikovsky's 5th is a captivating recording. Svetlanov's conduction, with his strong contrasts, his impetuous crescendi, brings to the symphony a new spell, that recovers its "slavonic" emotion, its original force. Excellent."

As you might expect from this heavy-weight conductor, this performance of 5th is very powerful, lavishing and deeply Russian. Every note is sung and nothing is understated. Blazing brass is overwhelming. The slow movement is sensitively and goegeously played. The sudden outburst toward the end of the slow movement is mind-blowing even if you know it's coming! The last movement is as magnificent as it can be. This account ranks high with Mravinsky, Karajan, Ormandy(RCA), Solti, and Klemperer's great recordings.

The Tempest is equally outstanding. I have several recordings by other conductors, but this one stands out. Svetlanov is a master in achieving most dramatic contrast between stormy forces and rapt serenity of the beautiful melodies. The work is the longest of all Tchaikovsky's tone poems, filled with amazing orchestration and inspired lyrical themes. It is a mystery that such a great work did not receive same acclaim as R&J or 1882 Overtures. 60&70s stereo sound is not bad."
