Fine performances by a master conductor whose early death really prevented him from achieving "Grand Old Man" status. In Romantic music, Rudolf Kempe had few peers during the '50s and '60s, and although his outstanding achievement may be as a conductor of opera--Wagner especially--this fine Tchaikovsky disc is also a worthy tribute to his memory. Poignant and reverent

"I've heard many versions of Tchaikovsky's 6th and most are well done. I own two other versions of this masterpiece and they're both very good. This version however rises to a new level. Kempe achieves a balance between restraint and indulgence. The symphony is touching and moving without ever getting maudlin or mawkish. Kempe makes the orchestra cry--while at the same time keeping the score noble and profound. There is a tender clarity of phrasing here that heightens the tragic poetry of Tchaikovsky's vision. If you're confused by the sheer number of available recordings of this work-- look no further. This is one you should get."
