Tea Leaf Green - live!
The Delite Rancher | Phoenix, Arizona | 07/16/2007
(4 out of 5 stars)

""Rock 'n' Roll Band" is the soundtrack to the Tea Leaf Green film by the same title. This disc plays a 5/19/06 show at the Fox Theater in Boulder, Colorado. Here the band rocks out some fan favorites like 'Jezebel' and 'These Two Chairs.' While the portability is a strength, it misses the DVD's surround sound capabilities. On this CD, the listener trades three songs ('Frank Hanzerbeak,' 'Make A Connection' and 'Taught to be Proud') from the DVD ('Morning Sun,' 'Don't Let It Down' and 'Sex in the 70's'). While Tea Leaf Green may have a growing and dedicated following, there's little here that distinguishes the group from any other rock 'n' band. The song writing is average. While the improvisation is strong, there's no voice or sound that really distinguishes these guys from any other straight rock jamband. Newbies should probably start a Tea Leaf Green discography with the ever lovely "Taught to Be Proud." That written, "Rock 'n' Roll Band" stands as a good soundtrack and an effective introduction to one of the scene's rising groups."

"Tea Leaf Green, hailing from the nostalgic center of jam rock - San Fransico, is one of the premiere rock bands on the scene today. They are a mixing pot of musical influences, including rock, folk, blues and funk with classic San Fransico psychadelia keeping with the spirit of bands like the Grateful Dead. Be careful not to dismiss these guys as another "jam band". Tea Leaf Green is definatley something special. Trevor Garrod offers stunning keyboard work and passionite crooning vocals. Guitar work offered by lead guitar Josh Clark is creative and engaging. Bass grooves served up by Ben Chambers here will make you want to dance. (Ben Chambers has since left T.L.G. and been replaced by Reed Matthis(Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey) Although they have some really good studio efforts to date these guys are really at home in a live setting. Excellent improvs and extended jams make a T.L.G. show seriously good time. Enter "Rock n' Roll Band" a taste of their addicting live musical prowess. This record features a great selection of songs by this versitile group, perfect for newbies and seasoned listeners alike. Although its a bit dated for the avid T.L.G listener as they have continued to progress since the 2006 recording of this show- aided by the addition of skilled jazz bassist Reed Matthis- "Rock n' Roll Band" remains on of my FAVORITE live records. Recommended for anyone who wants to hear the future of rock and roll.
