Would be 4 1/2 stars if that rating were available

"It's wonderful to hear from Terri Lyne Carrington after more than a decade of silence from her as a leader. In this basically modernistic set of post-bop, hard-bop, and blues-tinged numbers drummer and leader Carrington proves adept at a number of moves: complete mastery of her kit, composition, arranging, producing, and as an effective leader of some high-powered musical personalities such as Herbie Hancock, Wallace Roney, and Gary Thomas. As regards observations that it sounds like as 70s Blue Note Recording, one is tempted to say, What's wrong with that? and, What did you expect? given the personnel, which reads almost like a catalog of 70s Blue Note Artists. But to my ears, there's not a bit of nostalgia going on here. Just hip, modern jazz of the highest order. 1/2 star off for Angela Davis's gassy, PC liner notes, and for a couple self-indulgent drum solos."
