CD Reviews

Great Brazilian Jazz w/ a Superb Twist
Papetti | Mexico City | 02/23/2006
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Legendary Tetsuo Sakurai doesn't need special presentations; if you've been listening to Jazz for the past 20-25 years you know Casiopea and its original members (Minoru Mukaiya, Issei Noro, Tetsuo Sakurai & Akira Jimbo).

Here Tetsuo invited a stellar list of guests who made this project incredibly interesting.

1. Elisa. Here Ivan Lins shows us that he's still in perfect shape with this beautiful song.

2. Cancao Do Coracao. Is a song that knocked me out; I hadn't heard such a wonderful song like this one in a long time; I believe it's the Highlight of the whole CD easily. Rosa Passos plays the guitar and sings in her perfect-pitch angelical voice a song that has beautiful lyrics, and the interplay of Tetsuo's bass guitar is a w e s o m e.

3. Real. This is a song that Djavan had previously recorded in his Bird of Paradise CD in the 80's, and this new version is amazing; it's been slowed down, but the cadence Djavan and Tetsuo apply to it, is infectious and super enjoyable.

4. Venus. It showcases a "New" singer (at least to my knowledge) Tatiana who owns a very beautiful voice.

5. Com a Paz No Coracao. Filo plays the guitar and sings this woderful song.

6. A Estrela Namorada. Also showcased in here another "new" Brazilian Diva at least to my knowledge; but who also has a wonderful voice - Valeria Oliveira, who also plays the guitar and sings -.

7. Saudade De Voce. This is a good cut with Ivan Lins scatting through singing at unison with Tetsuo's Bass; a little bit too long in my opinion.

8. Navegando Sozinho. This is another enjoyable song performed by Filo Machado, a master of Jazz and of "Violao" (Acoustic Guitar); here he plays a fantastic line in the middle of the song along with Tetsuo; on the left channel you have Filo's guitar with an infectuos Bossa Nova cadence, in the middle channel you can enjoy Filo scatting as only he can do, and on the right channel Tetsuo's bass guitar. Wow!! you have to listen to it, explaining it on these lines would not do justice to it.

9. La Madrugada. Nora, I had never heard of her, but she's a great singer and she sings here in a very acceptable Spanish a great ballad.

10 & 11. These last two songs are wonderful and the perfect final note to this amazing CD.

If you love Brazilian Jazz, Jazz Bass Guitar, and/or any of these stars, you ought to make this CD yours at once; It's a w e s o m e.
