Synopsis

Product Description
It's rare for a band's second release to be a live recording. But then there's nothing typical about The Band Of Heathens. Live At Antone's - released here on DVD and CD - finds their concept of songwriters in the round with a rhythm section moving into exciting new territory. Now truly a magical musical entity, one that's comprised of singers/songwriters/guitar-pickers Colin Brooks, Gordy Quist and Ed Jurdi, bassist Seth Whitney and drummer John Chipman following in the footsteps of legendary names of Americana as The Band, Little Feat and Townes Van Zandt. Live at Antone's, recorded in June of 2007, shows why the quintet captured 2007's Best New Band at the Austin Music Awards. It's true that it was the first time they ever used a set list, but like all of their shows, this performance was an exhilarating mix of familiar tunes and some that were previously unrecorded. Throughout, the Heathens' refined brand of soul, folk and country shines in a new way.

CD Reviews

My new favourite album!!
K. Davies | Cambridge, UK | 11/04/2009
(5 out of 5 stars)

"I heard a track from this band on Bob Harris's country show on BBC Radio 2 in the UK. I was driving at the time, and repeated the name of the band over and over until I could pull in somewhere and scribble it down. I can no longer remember which track it was that I heard that night - all I could remember later was that I had desperately wanted not to forget their name. So I went onto Amazon and bought this. We all have different tastes, obviously, and just because it bowled me over doesn't mean it's for everyone, but I think this album is absolutely brilliant. It is bluesy and soulful, with a stunning standard of musicianship. There is not, for me, a single weak track on the album. The guitar playing - from each of the three guitarists - is just sublime, and each of them is possessed of a voice I would kill for. They perform this stuff as though they've been doing it since the cradle. I listened to the CD first and was open-mouthed in my car as track after track was just perfect, from the bluesy, rocking Unsleeping Eye, or Jenny was A Keeper, to the wonderfully soulful Philadelphia, or King of Colorado. Cornbread is a delightfully suggestive little thing that made me think of my girlfriend, but that's another matter! I could list each song - there isn't a bad track on here. Buy it. Seriously!"
