Seattle kindie band The Board of Education is back with a brand new album, BINARY, full of witty, hilarious and educational songs ripped right from the headlines of elementary school life!
Building on the success of their debut, THE FIRST ALBUM, as well as the chart-topping success of their 2012 Star Wars-themed single, Why Is Dad So Mad?, BINARY brings you more catchy classroom fun, but also explores new waters.
The witty school-curriculum songs are still here (learning the former Soviet Socialist Republics, or singing the praises of kevlar and its inventor, Stephanie Kwoleck), but at its heart, Binary is an album about kids (and kids-at-heart) trying to figure out life's larger mysteries. Evident, too, in the songs, is chief singer-songwriter Kevin Emerson's transition into parenthood.
But don't worry, the wacky elementary-school-science teacher is still present in songs like VASIMR to Mars! (an ode to a real-life experimental rocket) and I'm Not Here Right Now (with lyrics about both the hadopelagic ocean layer and ocelots), but Binary also explores the emotions of the first day of school in First Day, the challenge of managing friendships in Three, and the loss of the classroom fish, in The Ballad of Rodo Chouch.
And of course, Binary explores one of the most complicated and challenging relationships between today's parents and children in Why is Dad So Mad? (he s mad about Star Wars, and Mom is too!).
The common thread through all these stories are the young main characters, whether imagining being on Mars, that their friendships (or secret crushes) are as strong as binary stars, or just making it to Friday. Kevin has had some experience with these kind of elementary school stories, as the author of seven novels for elementary school readers, THE OLIVER NOCTURNE SERIES 1-6 and CARLOS IS GONNA GET IT (Scholastic), and the upcoming THE FELLOWSHIP FOR ALIEN DETECTION (HarperCollins).
And as with the first record, the glue of Binary is the MUSICAL BRAVADO of the band, who are once again afraid of no style, chord change or wild sound in the pursuit of thrilling musical adventure, and always ground their sound in a love of old-school kids music, like SchoolHouse Rock and early Electric Company.
So fire up Binary and get ready to Listen, Learn, and Rock!
