Synopsis
Amazon.comHaving proved with MTV Unplugged that they are more that just a bunch of pretty faces and that they can actually play their instruments, the Corrs return to the studio for their third proper album. Owners of Unplugged will already be familiar with "At Your Side" and "Radio," which are given the full studio treatment and endowed with a much fuller sound. Unfortunately, that's not necessarily a good thing; the album as a whole is marred by production that sanitizes past raw folkie qualities. The standout tracks, as a result, tend to be up-tempo selections, led by "Breathless" and "No More Cry." When the Corrs are good, they're very good; but when they're bad, they're just dull. There are also some strange changes in direction (the reggae-lite "Give It All Up" is a dramatic new sound that doesn't quite work). Unlike previous albums, In Blue doesn't flow effectively, due likely to the several different producers enlisted by the group, including Mr.Shania Twain, "Mutt" Lange. Maybe this is a case of too many cooks spoiling the broth. --Mel Roberts

Bright but a bit booring Jenny | 08/13/2000 (4 out of 5 stars) "I am a little disappointed at first. But as I get deeper into the music, I find the special Irish clang that I'm looking for. Although the Corrs have lost some of the melancholy that permeates their earlier albums, I still detect some genuine feelings in many songs. The band and their music have been styled to suit the broad public, and many of the lyrics sound like thypical pop-songs written for radio. Traditional Irish instruments have been put aside in order for the album to become more easy-listenable. Fortunately there's the instrumental "Rebel heart", which gives the album a nice finish. It sends you back to ancient Irland, where magic surrounded all music. The album has its up and downs, just as everything else in life. I guess I shouldn't expect a perfect album, knowing I'll never find one. The Corrs have beautiful voices, and know how to handle their instruments. Still I miss the lessons of life that their earlier lyrics gave. These seem a bit mass-produced and without real meaning, not all, but the majority. Though I love number three, which deals with the neverending quest of finding the right one. There's Somebody for someone."
