The eclectic record draws from a wide range of influences including Tom Petty, Wilco and The Zombies. Songs like the title track draw heavily on 70s AM rock. The dreamy Collin s Song mixes The Shins with Andrew Bird. Devouring is a gentle piano ballad about devotion which leads into January Home, a cold walk down an isolated street beneath a gray, cloudy sky. The somber tracks are complemented by fist-pumping anthems like the dirty Southern riff rockof Where We Were Before. The Southern label has been tossed around often in descriptions of the band. We have been called Southern rock, and I m beginning to warm up to that description, says vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Zach Holland. At first I didn t like it, because it implies Lynyrd Skynyrd and The Allman Brothers - good bands, but not bands we resemble. I think people call us Southern rock because we have a lapsteel player, but it seems like people are opening up to the idea that Southern rock can grow outside of its traditional boundaries. If we can borrow the grime and ghosts of Southern rock and take it in our own direction, then I will gladly wear that moniker. Though the songwriting efforts are generally led by Holland, vocalist/guitarist Todd Gill or steel-guitarist Jason Rich, the songs are also formed by drummer Tim Campbell, keyboardist/guitarist Dustin Bartholomew and bassist Bryan Brown, depending upon whose ideas the band likes most. The records always come out a little schizophrenic because of [the different members musical tastes], Holland sid. I used to worry about not having a uniform sound for people to latch on to, but we are what we are: a clash of lovers of indie rock, country music, classic rock, folk, dance and pop.
