Help Me (Get over This Mountain) - The Great Divide, Childers, Bob

It works for a number of reasons, not the least of which is the production charms of Lloyd Maines, who has worked with Jerry Jeff Walker, Joe Ely, Robert Earl Keen, and James McMurtry among others and thus knows a thing or two about countrified roots-rock. Maines is also responsible for the perfectly placed accents on pedal steel, banjo, Dobro, mandolin, and whatever else he could grab. Yet the Great Divide's most important asset is their honesty and their unaffectedness in both writing and delivering these simple songs, even though a certain amount of hollow frat-boy profundity does creep in at times--"College Days" might be the only song to reference ramen noodles! Still, their Steve Earle-without-the-depth-or-demons sound comes off as true to itself, which already puts them ahead of most contemporary country acts. --Marc Greilsamer« less

"I have to admit I have been listening to these guys for about a decade now, but if anyone wanted to get one of their CD's this is the one to get. Every song is solid, and every one is pure Great Divide. Mike did some of his best writing on this album and it was arranged excellently. Check out the boys website "GreatDivide.Com" if you are interested in seeing them live, but if you want great music to listen to all the time get this CD."

"Mike really knows how to write a tune! IMHO this is their best overall CD--not as many standouts, but solid the whole way through. If you get a chance to check out a show I highly recommend it! The lyrics are great and familiar to anyone! I would write more, but there's so much to say! They're rock-country with an emphasis on a rock feel with country sentimentality. Check out their other albums as well plus Mike McClure's (lead singer) solo CD "12 Pieces". It's acoustic and more mellow, but great IMHO! They have a new CD "Remain" that won't be on here 'till November, but is available on their website. I love it as well! www.thegreatdivide.com www.mikemccluremusic.com Check out Mike's diary! It's awesome!"

"Fun rollicking rockin' country roll, played the way you like it. If you're one of those folks like me who's basically a rock and roller, but likes rock tempered with the melody line of a good country song, The Great Divide is one of the bands you've been looking for (Reckless Kelly is the other). There may not be anything particularly revolutionary about The Great Divide's music, but I doubt there's a song on this CD you won't find yourself singing little bits of after a day or two. They're just so likable it's hard to understand why these guys don't have a permanent slot at the top of the charts."

"These Oklahoma boys don't know how to put out a bad song.......every single song on every album is excellent. Why aren't they in the spot-light of country music? They should be sweeping music award shows."
