Funk on Acid

"This collects the two best albums by a criminally underappreciated master of 70s funk. Jimmy Castor dared to go out as far on a limb as George Clinton, but managed to preserve a sense of humor in the process. It's Just Begun is worth owning just for the hit, "Troglodyte" (sampled by everyone from the Beasties to NWA). But that's not its best tune. That honor goes to the title track, which leads off with Aaron Coplandesque strings and thence to a horn/guitar piece good enough to make James Brown weep. The remaining tracks are solid.Phase 2 is Castor's weirdest record, beginning with tributes to Castor's hero, Leroy ("Say Leroy, the Creature from the Black Lagoon is your Father") and Jimmy Hendrix (I'll bet you didn't know that Foxy Lady and Purple Haze are the same song, did you?). Also a bit of Latin funk, straight funk, and acid rock.If you like funk, and don't mind taking a risk, this disc will make you happy."
Solid!

"Great funk from an innovator with a great sense of humor. Sounds like they were having fun!"
