Synopsis

Album Description
A ?family-spun folk record with attitude? is the way coproducer and recording engineer Heidi Gerber describes Unquiet, the debut album by The Jones Family on Shambling Gate Records. Gerber, whose work as a recording engineer has received numerous accolades, including two Grammy nominations, also says of Unquiet, ?Excellent musicianship plus great personalities equals a project that was fun to record and a CD that I?ll truly enjoy listening to.?The Joneses?father Chuck, mother Brenda and 17-year-old daughter Chenoa?recorded Unquiet at Bias Recording Co. in Springfield, Va. On the album, Chuck Jones plays the piano, acoustic guitar, Anglo concertina, pennywhistle and drum, and sings lead and backing vocals; Chenoa plays the acoustic guitar and sings lead and backing vocals; and Brenda contributes vocals. Coproducer Gerber plays electric bass on several songs, and other Washington area musicians also make guest appearances. A highlight of the album is 'Tom Deadlight', a rousing sea song with music by Ted Porter of the group Big Blow and the Bushwackers and words from a poem by Herman Melville. The title song, the English ballad 'The Unquiet Grave', features a haunting lead vocal by Chenoa and bravura work on the bodhran and bones by guest musician Myron Bretholz Coproducer Lawrence Paulson, president of Shambling Gate Records, said, ?What attracted us to this project was the naturalness of The Jones Family?s music. Their voices have a pure, true blend. They?re also excellent musicians who are sensitive to the lyrics of their songs. It?s a rare combination.?

CD Reviews

A superb first recording
Anna Gilcher | Silver Spring, MD United States | 01/06/2002
(5 out of 5 stars)

"The Jones family--parents Chuck & Brenda, and daughter Chenoa--has put together an impressive folk CD here, full of beauty, verve and humor. These family members obviously understand each other: their pacing is fabulous, their blending a joy, the harmonies are rich and full.Chenoa Jones, who is only 17, has a gorgeously mature voice and amazing flexibility and subtlety.I can't get enough of this recording and hope that the Joneses will grace us with lots more."
An Instant Favorite

"This CD has quickly become a favorite of our whole family. The heart-felt singing, excellent musicianship, and choice mix of material, make this a wonderful recording. The Jones family achieves the hauntingly sweet vocal blend that only close relatives seem to be able to attain (the Everly Brothers, the Carter family, Tim & Mollie O'Brien, etc.). I find myself humming or singing the tunes and then wanting to play the album again."
